This is exactly what I think about when new puppy owners tell me how wonderfully behaved their puppy is. The puppy follows them everywhere. Pays attention to everything they say. Other than a little chewing or some bathroom accidents, they are mostly just adorable.
And then the day comes when everything changes.
Puppies are wired to be cute, so we fall in love with them before they become rotten teenagers. That is not an accident. It is nature's way of making sure we keep them around long enough to find out what they are really capable of.
The Sixteen Week Switch
Right around sixteen weeks of age, something shifts. Your puppy enters what is called the exploratory development stage. They discover that there is a whole world out there full of amazing things to investigate. They start to act independently. They stop following you around and start making their own decisions.
This makes perfect sense when you look at wild canids like wolves and coyotes. Young wild puppies stay close to the den and close to the pack because they are small and vulnerable. But once their motor skills develop, off they go to explore.
That instinct lives in your puppy too. The sweet dog that used to trail you around the yard is suddenly darting across the street to greet a jogger. Ignoring your calls. Jumping on every person who comes through the door. Pulling on the leash toward every dog they see.
I encourage every new puppy owner to mark their puppy's sixteen-week birthday on the calendar and watch for the change. It is coming. The question is whether you are ready for it. Knowing the signs that your dog needs professional help can make all the difference when that moment arrives.
What Structured Socialization Looks Like in Traverse City
Most people think socializing a puppy means letting them say hello to every dog and person they meet. Strangers give them treats. Other dogs come rushing up for a greeting. Everyone tells you what a cute puppy you have.

If you could only teach your puppy one thing in those first sixteen weeks, I would tell you to teach them the word no.
Most puppy advice focuses entirely on rewards. Yes earns a cookie. Yes earns praise. Yes earns a treat. And yes is important. But if yes is your gas pedal, no is your brake. And you cannot drive safely with only a gas pedal.
Once your puppy understands both yes and no, you can teach them almost anything. Start with the basics:
- Going potty promptly when you take them to their spot in the yard
- Resting quietly in their crate
- Not biting at hands
- Not jumping up on people
Young puppies can learn these things. They are not too young. In fact the first sixteen weeks of your puppy's life are the best possible window for this kind of learning. Do not waste it waiting to see if they grow out of the naughty stuff. They will not. They will just get bigger and better at it.
When to Start Formal Puppy Training
I like to start puppies in formal training at around five months of age. By this point they have enough focus and physical coordination to really engage with the learning process. And five months is young enough that we can get ahead of the worst teenage behavior before it takes hold.
Five months is also when I see the best results the fastest. The puppy is in a natural stage of learning, and the owner gets to enjoy this brief and wonderful time with their young dog instead of spending it frustrated and stressed.
